Efficacy of transabdominal magnetic field therapy on constipation severity in chronic functional constipation: A randomized controlled trial
(Professional Medical Publications, 2026) Elverişli, Gizem Boztaş; Özkaraoğlu, Dilanur Kutlu; İnce, Büşra; Ataç, Amine; Atılgan, Esra
Objectives: To evaluate transabdominal magnetic field therapy (MFT) for constipation severity and related outcomes in adults with chronic functional constipation. Methodology: This multicenter, three-arm randomized controlled trial was conducted at Istanbul Medipol University and Istanbul Gedik University, Türkiye, from February 2019 to April 2026. Adults meeting Rome III criteria were randomized to MFT, sham, or standard care (SC) (n=75); 60 completers formed the per-protocol analysis (20/group). MFT was administered at 25-Hz and 30-Gauss for 30 minutes, twice weekly for eight weeks. Sham replicated the procedure without active stimulation; SC received standardized constipation management education. The primary outcome was the Constipation Severity Instrument (CSI) total score. Secondary outcomes assessed bowel habits, defecation time, stool form, and constipation-related quality of life (PAC-QOL). Results: MFT reduced CSI more than SC (mean difference in change [MD], -20.55; 95% CI, -24.97 to -16.13) and sham (MD, -14.40; 95% CI, -18.82 to -9.98; both p<0.001). MFT also improved complete spontaneous bowel movements versus SC (ratio of rate ratios [RRR], 1.57; 95% CI, 1.20-2.05) and sham (RRR, 2.39; 95% CI, 1.87-3.07), and reduced PAC-QOL versus SC (MD, -21.25; 95% CI, -24.09 to -18.41) and sham (MD, -11.60; 95% CI, -14.44 to -8.76; all p≤0.001). No adverse events were observed or reported among completers. Conclusions: Transabdominal MFT was associated with greater short-term improvements in constipation severity, bowel function, and constipation-related quality of life than sham treatment and standard care. Future studies should establish optimal stimulation parameters and evaluate long-term effectiveness and safety.
Acute responses to local tibialis anterior fatigue: Effects on dynamic balance and muscle mechanical properties
(Sage Publishing, 2026) İlez, Ali; Şahbaz, Yasemin; Batur, Nergiz
Background: Local muscle fatigue can influence the neural functional mechanisms and intrinsic mechanical properties of the muscle. Considering the importance of the tibialis anterior (TA) muscle during walking and upright standing positions, the primary aim of this study is to understand how induced local muscle fatigue affects both dynamic balance and changes in muscle mechanical properties. Methods: Thirty healthy participants (mean age: 21.83±1.41 years) were included in the study. Muscle mechanical properties of the dominant TA were assessed using MyotonPro, and dynamic balance was evaluated bilaterally with the Modified Star Excursion Balance Test (mSEBT) before and after the fatigue protocol. The fatigue protocol was applied bilaterally to ankle dorsiflexor muscle muscles and consisted of repeated 30-s isometric dorsiflexion contractions followed by 15-s rest intervals, continued until participants reported a Borg Rating of Perceived Exertion score of 7 or higher. Result: Following the fatigue protocol, a significant improvement was observed in left mSEBT and right mSEBT scores (p < 0.05), except in the anterior direction, where no significant change was detected. Regarding muscle mechanical properties, stiffness decreased, but this change was not statistically significant (p =0.06), whereas relaxation time and creep significantly increased (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Localized ankle dorsiflexor muscle fatigue acutely altered both dynamic balance and muscle mechanical properties. The apparent improvement in mSEBT scores likely reflects short-term neuromuscular compensation rather than genuine performance enhancement. Decreased stiffness and increased relaxation indicate transient adaptations in the muscle’s passive behavior.
A Comparison of the Color Stability and Surface Roughness of 2 Different Laminate Porcelains in Various Solutions

Background: Esthetics is a primary concern in modern dentistry, and laminate veneers are commonly used for addressing discoloration and shape anomalies. Understanding the effects of various beverages on the color and surface roughness of dental ceramics is crucial for long-term clinical success. Methods: Fifty specimens were prepared from feldspathic (VITA Cerec) and leucite-reinforced ceramic blocks (IPS Empress Esthetic CAD). After standardized polishing and glazing, the specimens were immersed in 5 solutions (coffee, tea, cola, wine, and distilled water) and stored for 3 months. Color changes (ΔE) were measured with a spectrophotometer, and surface roughness (Ra) was evaluated using a profilometer at baseline, 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months. Results: IPS Empress Esthetic CAD specimens demonstrated greater color change than VITA specimens, with wine causing the most significant ΔE values in both groups. All color changes remained clinically acceptable (ΔE < 3.3). Surface roughness increased slightly over time but did not show statistically significant differences in any group. Conclusion: Both laminate porcelain materials demonstrated acceptable color stability and surface integrity after prolonged exposure to common beverages. Wine produced the highest color changes, while roughness changes were minimal and not significant.
A NARRATIVE REVIEW ON ORTHOTIC APPROACHES IN THE TREATMENT OF BRACHIAL PLEXUS BIRTH PALSY
(Turkish Physiotherapy Association, 2026) İnal, Habibe Serap; Koc, Ebru A. K. B. U. G. A.; Türkmen, Ceyhun; Yıldırım, Gülenay
Purpose: This narrative review synthesized recent evidence on orthotic interventions for brachial plexus birth palsy (BPBP), focusing on indications, timing, and wear schedules. Methods: We searched for English-language articles (published 2004-2025) in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, ProQuest, and Google Scholar using "brachial plexus birth palsy" combined with orthosis-related terms. Thirteen studies met inclusion criteria. Results: Early shoulder abduction-external rotation and elbow flexion positioning orthoses improved joint alignment and reduced contracture risk in infants. In older children, static-progressive or dynamic braces corrected established elbow contractures. Caregiver education and adherence influenced outcomes. Wear schedules ranged from a few hours daily for dynamic daytime bracing to near-continuous early positioning. Overall study quality was low and outcome measures varied. Conclusion: Current evidence is limited, but early shoulder abduction-external rotation and elbow positioning orthoses appear beneficial in BPBP. Later static or dynamic braces complement surgery or rehabilitation for residual contractures. High-quality research is needed to establish standardized protocols and determine optimal orthosis type, timing, and duration for each severity level.
The relationship between mental toughness, stress, and mindfulness in climbers
(Frontiers Media, 2026) Alp, Hulusi; Bozgüney, Reha; Türkay, İbrahim Kubilay; Turaç, Görkem; Öcal, Zeynep Senem Söyleyici; Yazar, Didem; Temur, Eyüp; Can, Banu
Background: Climbing is a sport that demands high levels of both physical and mental effort, and athletes may encounter significant stress during performance. Mental toughness refers to an athlete’s capacity to cope with stress and maintain performance under challenging conditions. Mindfulness is the conscious awareness and experiential engagement with the present moment. This study aimed to examine the relationship between mental toughness and stress levels in climbers, and to investigate the moderating role of mindfulness in this relationship. Methods: The study included 150 active climbers (90 males, 60 females; mean age = 25.4 ± 4.7 years). Mental toughness was assessed using the Sports Mental Toughness Questionnaire (SMTQ) and the Mental Toughness Inventory (MTI), stress levels were measured via the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10), and mindfulness was evaluated using the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale (MAAS). Multiple regression and moderation analyses were conducted using SPSS and the PROCESS macro, with 5,000 bootstrap samples and 95% confidence intervals. Results: Correlation analyses indicated significant negative relationships between SMTQ and MTI scores and PSS-10 scores, as well as between MAAS scores and PSS-10 scores (p < 0.001). Multiple regression analyses revealed that SMTQ (β = −0.33), MTI (β = −0.38), and MAAS (β = −0.29) significantly and negatively predicted stress levels (p < 0.001). Moderation analysis showed that higher levels of mindfulness strengthened the negative effect of mental toughness on stress (Interaction β = −0.18, p = 0.002). Conclusion: These findings indicate that both mental toughness and mindfulness play a crucial role in stress management among climbers. In particular, mindfulness enhances the stress-reducing effects of mental toughness. The results provide practical implications for sport psychology interventions and climbing training programs.
