The Role of Boron in the Diet and as a Dietary Supplement

Boron is a naturally occurring trace element that has historically received limited attention in human nutrition and is of increasing biological importance. It is widely found in nature, primarily through food and drinking water, and has attracted attention for its potential health benefits. Emerging evidence suggests that boron supplementation may support bone health, cognitive function, mineral and hormonal metabolism, the antioxidant defense system, body weight regulation, and inflammation reduction. This review examines the physiological roles, health, and clinical effects of boron, both through dietary intake and supplementation. Although not currently classified as an essential nutrient, boron appears to be biologically important, and it is thought that supplementation may have positive effects on many health conditions, including osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, body weight regulation, cancer prevention and treatment, diseases associated with oxidative stress, neurological and mental disorders, and hormonal imbalance.
The Comorbidity of Specific Learning Disorders in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurobiological disorder that begins in childhood, with symptoms continuing throughout life, negatively impacting an individual’s cognitive, social, and academic functioning. Specific learning disability (SLD) is a developmental disorder characterized by its initial signs being noticeable during the preschool years. The broad category of SLD encompasses various skill deficits, but the most common symptoms are typically divided into three broad subcategories: reading disorder, written-language disorder, and mathematics disorder. Generally, there is an estimated comorbidity rate between SLD and ADHD ranging from 31% to 45%. While ADHD is conventionally defined as an externalizing disorder, children with this condition often exhibit learning difficulties and academic problems in addition to behavioral issues such as impulsivity, oppositional behavior, and conduct problems. These academic difficulties are frequently overlooked, as behavioral problems, often linked to impulsivity, tend to take precedence. The purpose of this review is to draw attention to these overlooked areas of concern in children diagnosed with ADHD, both in clinical practice and academic literature, and to review relevant literature studies.
Spatial characterization of the phoenixin receptor in the lacrimal and major salivary glands

Objective: To identify and characterize the expression of phoenixin receptor GPR173 (G protein-coupled receptor 173) in the rat lacrimal and major salivary glands (parotid, submandibular, and sublingual). GPR173 is associated with hormonal regulation and autoimmunity; however, its expression in exocrine glands has yet to be characterized. Design: Under anesthesia, eight Sprague Dawley rats underwent bilateral dissection of the lacrimal and major salivary glands. GPR173 expression was assessed using Western blotting and immunofluorescence. Immunoreactivity was quantified using ImageJ software and compared using the Friedman test with DunnBonferroni post hoc analysis. Results: GPR173 protein expression was found in all examined exocrine glands. In the major salivary glands, GPR173 was detected in both acinar and ductal cells, while expression was confined to acinar cells in the lacrimal gland. The submandibular and parotid glands showed significantly higher immunoreactivity than the lacrimal gland (p < .01 and p < .05, respectively). Ductal epithelium showed stronger immunopositivity compared to acinar epithelium. GPR173 immunoreactivity was also observed in periductal stromal tissue in major salivary glands. Conclusion: GPR173 expression was observed in both acinar and ductal cells of all major salivary glands, while in the lacrimal gland, it was restricted to the acinar cells. This differential localization suggests tissue-specific relevance.
INVESTIGATION OF THE REASONS FOR PREFERENCE AND EMPLOYMENT EXPECTATIONS OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS STUDYING IN THE DEPARTMENT OF PHYSIOTHERAPY AND REHABILITATION IN TÜRKİYE

Purpose: To investigate the reasons why international students (ISs) studying in the Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation (PTR) departments in T & uuml;rkiye chose to study in this field and their employment expectations, using sample from one public and two foundation universities in & Idot;stanbul. Methods: A total of 564 students were invited to participate in the study. Participants were asked to complete a 12-item questionnaire prepared by the researchers, which assessed their reasons for choosing PTR education in T & uuml;rkiye and their career plans after graduation. Results: A total of 267 students participated in the study (200 from Turkish-medium programs and 67 from English-medium programs). The most cited reason for choosing to study in T & uuml;rkiye among both Turkish-and English-medium students was cultural similarity [60% (n=200); 58.2% (n=39), respectively]. Among Turkish-medium students, 50.2% planned to work in T & uuml;rkiye, and 17.4% planned to return to their home countries. Additionally, 76.1% expressed interest in pursuing graduate studies in T & uuml;rkiye. Among English-medium students, 28.4% intended to work in T & uuml;rkiye, and 11.9% planned to return home. In this group, 61.2% stated that they were considering graduate education in T & uuml;rkiye. There was a statistically significant difference between the two groups in terms of the percentage of students who intended to work or pursue graduate education in T & uuml;rkiye (p=0.001 and p=0.018, respectively). Conclusion: According to our findings, a significant proportion of ISs, particularly those studying in Turkish-medium PTR programs, intend to work in T & uuml;rkiye after graduation. This should be taken into account in workforce planning efforts for physiotherapists.
Exercise Interventions for Improving Balance, Strength, and Functional Capacity in Older Adults: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Age-related declines in strength and balance increase fall risk in nursing home residents. This study compared the effects of the modified Otago Exercise Program and the Large-Amplitude Functional Exercise Program (LAFEP) on fall risk, balance, functional capacity, and lower-extremity strength. In this randomized controlled trial, 70 participants (aged >= 65) residing in nursing homes were randomly assigned to the modified Otago Exercise Program (n = 35) or the LAFEP (n = 35). Both groups received supervised group exercise three times weekly for 12 weeks. Primary outcomes were the functional reach test and the timed up-and-go test. Secondary outcomes included the Performanz Balance System, the 6-min walk test, and the five times sit-to-stand test. Both interventions led to significant within-group improvements (p < .05). However, the LAFEP group demonstrated significantly greater improvements in dynamic balance, specifically in the functional reach test (p = .03). Improvements in functional mobility outcomes, including the timed up-and-go (p = .67) and the five times sit-to-stand tests (p = .17), were also more pronounced in the LAFEP group; however, these between-group differences did not reach statistical significance. Both the modified Otago Exercise Program and the LAFEP were effective in enhancing balance and functional outcomes for older adults in residential care. The LAFEP, however, yielded superior gains specifically in dynamic balance. The findings suggest that the LAFEP, adapted from neurorehabilitation principles, may be a viable and potentially more effective alternative to conventional fall prevention exercise programs for this population.
